The Fourth of July is a big holiday that most rarely imagine “which wine will I drink?” It’s a day when people typically gather with family and friends to enjoy barbecues, parades, fireworks and more. Bases are usually covered when it comes to beer, seltzers, cocktails and such, but what if you want to celebrate with wine instead? Where to begin? Red, white, rosé and everything in between, that’s where! Let’s imagine a few of the foods you may be indulging in for the fourth and have some fun with pairing ideas. Barbecue. A Rosé is the perfect complement to the sweet, smoky, flavors of barbecue and the acidity is refreshing in the summer. We also love a good Zinfandel but if it is hot, hot, hot, where you are, shoot for a rosé. Hot Dogs. This may sound funny but just try it for yourself – pair hot dogs with an Albariño, Riesling or Rosé. If you want to go red, give Grenache a whirl. Burgers baby. As odd as it sounds, chilled reds are truly a dazzler in summer. To compliment burgers, try a nicely chilled Pinot Noir or Cabernet – does the trick for us. What about our favorite crowd pleaser, sausage! Similar to hot dogs, try a white with refreshing acidity to balance the fat, like Riesling or Grüner Veltliner. Grilled Chicken. We love Pinot Noir (also slightly chilled) or something like a Sauvignon Blanc or even a Pinot Gris. Finally, because we could go on and on, what to pair with Potato or Pasta Salads? These summer staples pair really well with citrus forward whites. Give Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner or even Albariño a go. We hope you all have a safe and happy Fourth of July, and that it is filled with delicious food and most importantly, epic wines.
