The Willamette Valley is 150 miles long and roughly 60 miles wide! It’s Oregon’s largest AVA. The Willamette Valley runs from the Columbia River in Portland, and south through Salem to the Calapooya Mountains outside Eugene. The Willamette Valley was the first to plant Pinot Noir in Oregon. The name Willamette comes from the Clackamas, a subsection of the lower Columbia Chinook Indians, and they called the dwelling and fishing site across from where the Clackamas River enters the Willamette River, Wallamt. There are currently over 700 wineries in the Willamette Valley and it is Oregon’s largest wine region. The Willamette Valley’s leading varietal is of course, Pinot Noir, but producers are captivating audiences with Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, among some 72 other varietals.
