We will be visiting some of the premier Pinot Noir producers in the Willamette Valley. We have selected these wineries not only for their outstanding red wines, but for their reputation and atmosphere as well. The line-up shown below is our standard program, but of course it can be slightly modified to accommodate your needs.
WILLAMETTE VALLEY OVERVIEW
After gathering our group, the first thing your guide will do provide you is an overview of the Willamette Valley, including the vineyards, appellations, and geography to lay a foundation on which you can build as you travel through the Valley. Bring your camera, IPhone but leave your gum and mints at your hotel!
Anam Cara Winery just opened a brand new facility in Newberg, Oregon and produces some of the best pinot noir and riesling's that are estate bottled in the Chehalem Mountains. Sheila and Nick are the owners, growers and caretakers of the land. The words Anam Cara are Celtic for "friend of my soul" and symbolize the long journey from Napa they have taken to make wine. In 2001, the family came to Oregon, purchasing a run down walnut, plum and filbert orchard which was to become the home of Nicholas Vineyard and Anam Cara Cellars wines. While Sheila is busy writing and running the tasting room, Nick can be found on his tractor, b usy preparing for the next chore.
WOW!!! What a fantastic facility and a great ensemble of employees. Domain Serene's dramatic five level gravity flow winery sits atop the prestigious Dundee Hills where Oregon Pinot Noir began. Domain Serene owns 130 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards. The wines poured feature a Chardonnay, three wonderful Pinot Noir's and a few Syrah's, one from Walla Walla, Washington, and another from Southern Oregon. This winery is as Napaesque as the Willamette Valley has to offer.
CHEESE PLATTER ALONG THE WAY AT AN UNDISCLOSED PLACE.......
Arbor Brook Vineyards is a high-quality grower and producer of fine wines, specializing in Oregon Pinot Noir. Situated on the southern flank of Yamhill County's famed Chehalem Mountain near Newberg, Oregon, they are in good company. Several of the region's best vineyards and wineries surround them.
Owners Dave and Mary Hansen planted their first premier block ArborBrook Vineyards with Dijon clone 777 vines in 2001. Spring 2006 saw the completion of planting the second block of premium Pinot Noir – containing Dijon clone 115 and Pommard, an Old World clone. If Dave is in town on the weekends, he will pouring the wines. He is one of the most energetic, passionate people you will meet today. He is very friendly and knowledgeable not only about his vineyards, but everything that surrounds his property. This isn't as fancy place, but the wines speak for themselves.
Josh Bergstrom happens to be one of those quiet low key ROCKSTAR winemakers that knows how to handle his fruit in great years and challenging ones. This Estate makes an amazing Riesling, creamy Chardonnay, several Pinot Noirs and a desert wine that will rock your world. The wines are not inexpensive, but deliver time and time again. He will be featured on wineupTV.com soon so you will get to know his philosophy and wine making techniques. I went to High School with his sister, Kendall, who owns Farm to Fork Restaurant as well as the Inn at Red Hills. If you are staying in the area another small quaint place to stay is The Dundee Manor B&B.
If Don is around and available to pour is wines, he is truly an individual you have to meet. At 78, this retired Nasa Physicist is the nicest, hardworking farmer, winemaker and friend to many. The wines are great, the stories even better and his enthusiasm abound. He is still planting vineyards, riding his own tractor and making his own wines. He will welcome you with a glass of Pinot Gris, then talk passionately about his Pinot Noirs that he has named after his grandchildren, all with different characteristics. He believes that "it's the journey, not the destination" that is most satisfying. I totally agree and may he live another 40 years!!
MINERAL SPRINGS RANCH is a 240-acre savanna-like oak woodland and grazing land. It is the home of our Estate vineyard, planted to 15 acres of Pinot Noir in 2002 and 2003 as well as an additional 15 acres in 2006. Two acres of Chardonnay were included in the 2006 plantings and are devoted entirely to our sparkling wine production. Located just east of the town of Carlton, the ranch is perched on a mesa with gentle slopes and commanding views of the surrounding Yamhill-Carlton District. Our production facilities and hospitality buildings are here as well, allowing us complete control of all operations. Tony and his wife Michelle are the coolest people to chat with. Courtney, who is so gracious to my guests truly makes visiting Soter Vineyards a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
If time permits, we will get to another winery.
